Frequently Asked Questions about A Taste of Judaism... Are You Curious?™

Q: I don’t know anything about Judaism…is this class for me?

A: It certainly is. A Taste of Judaism…Are You Curious?™ is designed for people who have limited or no Jewish background but are interested in learning about Judaism. Many participants are unaffiliated Jews who don’t feel that they know much about their religion, the adult children of interfaith couples, non-Jews who are interested in learning more about Judaism, and partners in Interfaith relationships. All sorts of people take this class, including people who want to know more about their Jewish colleagues’ religion, and grandparents of children being raised Jewish who are not Jewish themselves. The list goes on and on.

Q: Can you describe a Taste of Judaism session to me?

A: Sure! While every class is slightly different there are some main constants that you can expect. You will be warmly welcomed at the location by a volunteer or the class instructor. After everyone arrives the teacher will explain some basics about the Jewish texts that will be used to teach the course and he or she will likely distribute copies of these materials to you. Then you will dive in together to talk about the texts; how they illustrate Jewish values and thought and how they may be related to our contemporary lives. There will be ample time for questions and discussion.

Q: I understand that these classes are taught by rabbis. I’ve never met a rabbi. What should I expect?

A: The rabbis and cantors who teach this course are friendly, warm, and encourage questions. They are teaching this course because they love Judaism and are eager to teach people at all levels about it. There is no need to feel uncomfortable. All members of the class will learn together.

Q: Is this the right course for me/us? Will there be other people like me/us attending?

A: There is no "typical" Intro participant but there will definitely be other interfaith couples in your class. Both couples and individuals take the course. Our participants come from a variety of religious and racial backgrounds. Gay and lesbian couples frequently participate in Taste of Judaism. Some of our participants are Jewish individuals who want to reconnect and/or learn more about Judaism and some are not Jewish but are curious about Judaism.
